I find the RE003 on my car (electric steering) gives a lot of feedback through the wheel, much more than my previous tyres (Michelin Primacy) which felt disconnected in comparison. They have totally taken the playfulness out of my cars handling, and it just feels numb and vague. Only from what I've experienced (on a BA XR6T 245/40/18 tyre, shockworks coilover suspension) is the Potenza RE003's are a far superior tyre in terms of lateral grip/stability/response over the Michelin Pilot sport 4. put Michelin PS4s on my Passat before Christmas and was very disappointed. At least, that's what the tyre sales guys from two different shops have told me, despite I'm sure potentially making more money out of more expensive run flat tyres if they were to clinch that sale. That is very bizarre behaviour you're describing there. Excellent steering response, lots of steering feedback (which I like, every little join in the tarmac comes through the steering)... watching the steering wheel kick left and right as it tramlines over ruts approaching traffic lights is really amusing (though I can see why other people would think this is a undesirable characteristic). I've been on them for about 500km so will give them till 1000km and hope things get better. For an IS300 I'd probably go for the RE003. Not surprised you've not mentioned NVH that'll be next when things become the norm. :) I turned the front Koni shocks on the other car up to the stiffest setting as I couldn't stand how vague it felt on anything less than that.
I have the PS4 in 235/40/18 on my RS Megane 225 Cup. I think it's interesting how Bridgestone construct a relatively low grip (but competitive with most other road sports tyres in the dry) road tyre (the RE003) with a case construction more similar^ to a stiff (but stickier) track day tyre. They are a bit softer riding than the RE050's (less stiff sidewall), and with 40K km on them already it looks like there is easily 10-20K more*. Even that boat actually appreciates the difference. go the RE050A.Thanks Rakddon – this helps. Hankook offers a range of different tire types including Ventus for durable performance, Dynapro for light trucks, and Optimo for touring vehicles. RE003 has far less aggressive cross-hatching on the tread than PS4. DId you have experience with different cars? Ooops, yes Dunlops. I don't have anything else to compare them to. 215/45 PS4 tyres on 17x8 rims on a 2016 MX5. So maybe the Goodyear Asymmetric 3 would be a good choice in the wet? Hankook offers long-lasting tires with unmatched performance. I agree to the use of cookies and tracking mechanisms which are used to analyse my activity on this website in order to improve my user experience. Hello everyone, I've been running the new hankook RS4 tires on my 86 for the past months with so far 1 track day and another track day coming within the month. They certainly work for me. I notice the Pilot Super Sport is generally a heavier tyre, somewhat like the RE003 is, whereas the PS4 is significantly lighter. I think that calling PS4S "Pilot Super Sport 2" would be more logical, given the immense brand recognition they have built up for Pilot Super Sport. I am still baffled at the contradictory comments that different people leave... Falcon XR6 Turbo FG driver says about the Pilot Sport 4...I fell for the hype and changed to theseAre rubbish at hard cornering or any aggressive driving,Has next to no feedback,Overall they feel like you're driving on really sticky gym balls, even when pumped up to 48psi. Although that will mean ordering from Tirerack in your small size. The Hankook Ventus RS4 is a Extreme Performance Summer tyre designed to be fitted to Passenger Car. They *seem* to reach their edges a little earlier than I would expect. Hankook Kinergy Eco K425 (Passenger Tyre): 4.3 out of 5 stars from 3 genuine reviews on Australia's largest opinion site ProductReview.com.au. Pilot Sport 4 does even better in the wet on tests, but if they feel so strange I don't think they are acceptable. The PS4 seems baffling... How strange. They are noticeably more grippy, but I don't have confidence in them as I can't feel what they are doing, I just have to turn the wheel and hope they will grip. The right-now steering [of the Indy 500 / Re003] was very precise, making it easy to place the car through turns, but with minimal resistance and no communication through the steering wheel, it was more akin to a computer simulation of driving than an actual path from the steering wheel to the road. Every tyre that's not the same as the last make/model will feel different. Seems like I may have been disappointed if I had bought PS4s. Bridgestone are pretty gutsy to actually publish the force vs slip angle plot (normally that's propitiatory,), which shows the RE003 makes 8% more grip than the RE002: https://youtu.be/7ONFPEZMNWo?t=4m12s {Specifically 225s make 4.8kN~480kgf of force, at 7 degrees slip angle at 38 psi... Not that that means anything to me, lol. [Goodyear/Dunlop prices in Australia however are comical! Hence, I'm fitting non-run flat PS4s on mine tomorrow. Cars without ABS may prefer Nitto and Toyo tires. Could it be because the tyres were only made in February, so the rubber hasn't cured properly yet? I even tried pushing the pressures up to 45 psi but they still felt like mushy marsh mellows. Absolutely. I appreciate both Pilot Sport 4S and Super Sport sit above the Pilot Sport 4, and that could explain why Pilot Sport 4 is "just" a really grippy touring tyre....? Maybe the Aurion just doesn't give you as good road feel as the CLA250 and M140i. :) They are *waaaaaay* too soft, no road feel at all (even at 38psi). Show All. https://youtu.be/D0rUhHQM3lc?t=2m24s That would sure explain the hosts' incredulity about its steering... [They match my description exactly, actually! I’m not a total numpty (many will disagree \0/), but given this is a new car, I don’t have a reference point as to whether these tyres are brilliant or not. Yet the brand new Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's I bought were fantastic straight away. then that somewhat defeats the notion of the Bridgestone being more fun, so I guess Michelin it is. Another win for Bridgestone over Michelin? I have the new version of the p7. :), For best value for money, I would probably pick the Pirelli Cinturato P7 for $770/set after 10% off, that seems reasonable for runflat tyres, and they are a solid touring tyre. Oops can’t go for it. Completely agree. An exceptional, ultra-comfortable touring tyre with exceptional braking performance though. PS4 may well be thr better tyre but RE003 are better valued as often can get 4 for 3 and have are a reasonable RRP price Eg 235 40 18 $600 balance and fitted. Yes it is basically the same tire but for the US market above, the tread wear rating is much higher at 340 so it would last longer at the expense of less grip compared to the RE003 here. This could be because I have fitted the tyres to the maximum width rim for a 215/45 tyre. I reckon the Potenza will be a better match to my requirement, even though objectively it's inferior (less grip, uncomfortable). However, I notice that a lot of the glowing reviews are from people who have fitted them to Toyota Camry and base model VW Polos and the like, and so with such soft suspension I'm not sure if they can discern much about how sharp the tyre feels. For mine, they’re pretty solid in the dry. Stabilizes tread for long life and optimizes handling. Whereas the PS3 had oodles of grip and told me when I was starting to lose traction (roll off the accelerator a millimeter and it goes back to full grip, the PS4 just says screw you and understeers its way through the corner. Same size PS4 are about $230 each and sometimes can get $100 off. :) Well I haven't "tried any corners" yet. The track day models RE11A/RE070 have a similar tyre weight and presumably similar construction to S001/RE050A. The company is well known for its involvement in motorsports and its sponsoring of other sports as well. But like I said, no reference point, buffoon etc and still getting to know the car. Ride comfort and low noise were brilliant but the sidewalls were far too soft for them to be considered a performance tyre. May I suggest to consider avoiding run-flat RE050A if you can? Hope so, so far I really don't like these tyres, they seem to have ruined the car. Yet there is only 4 weeks and 1000km available for them to be returned (the sales chap was quite insistent they should be returned within 1 or 2 days, go figure) – so I can't wait for too long! They've turned it from a mushy understeerer into a pointy, responsive and highly enjoyable little hot hatch. I tried the steering thing again, and lo and behold, when you let go of the steering wheel with the RE003 it returns slowly to centre (meaning you can tip it into corner and then it will hold its line...? However, if you want to maintain a little bit of a spirited nature in your driving style in the wet, the PS4 does very well but I find I get a more neutral steering feedback with the PS4S. I've personally had no issues with wet weather cornering and braking with the RE003, I drove through heavy rain again last night and I’m still not convinced. If so Michelin PS4 should fit the bill nicely. They are a very sticky tyre and I have a lot of confidence in them, wet and dry. It seems it's hard to extrapolate from one car to another, and one brand and model of tyre to another... You make a pretty good point here. The Hankook Ventus RS4 is built with black carbon and silica to ensure the tires grip even when they get extremely hot. This is a car with a quick steering rack and very firm suspension and the handling is horrible (it's like an instant Camry conversion), I can only imagine how bad a car with normal suspension and normal steering would handle on these tyres... :/. this must be how most normal tyres feel, and it's not something I considered particularly noteworthy before encountering the PS4! You should feel at one with a tyre straight out of the shop I reckon, and seeing you don't – might be worth returning for a set of Potenzas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YckYaZZ2vKM, that the first inch of radial steering motion seems disconnected — like you don't know what the wheels are doing, and that the on-centre feel is just "incorrect and annoying". YMMV. RE003 is not a wet monster or anything, but is more than capable. Almost tempted to return the tyres if that's possible, or complain to Michelin about this crap. PPS. [So I changed to another set of ContiSportContact 5s]. Not surprised you've not mentioned NVH that'll be next when things become the norm. Currently the car has Bridgestone ER033 run flat tires and they crashed out at 30k mark. The new Ford Fiesta ST comes with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres... https://car-images.bauersecure.com/pagefiles/70270/ford_fiesta_st_09.jpg*and* the new Ford Fiesta ST has bizarre springy steering & vague, uncertain response too... https://youtu.be/pQiH46h81mU?t=8m36s. Sometimes there are also unwanted sideways oscillations when cornering load is changed rapidly during entry/exit of sharp turns. Moreover, we reduce the problem that the load on the shoulder is weighted due to the air pressure is relatively low in case of products which pursue Fast LapTime. The South Korean tire company Hankook Tire Group is headquartered in Seoul and is the 7th largest tire company in the world. ), it doesn't spring back dramatically to centre like the Michelin PS4. Recent comparisons in Motor Mag and Wheels i think show little difference between RE003's and other top competitors in wet grip. Great tyre, but that was coming from a very old set of Goodyear Fast Response. Although the 2006 STI with the RE003 wasn't that great either. I would be very interesting to know what the difference is between the "ST" (silent tuned?) After my last set of Michelin PSS, I'd never go back to anything other than the Michelin Pilot series. However the PS4 would be a fantastic touring tyre: *very, very* comfortable and with extremely good braking performance. PS4 sound a bit hit and miss depending on the car/steering setup or preferences. I have the PS4 in 235/40/18 on my RS Megane 225 Cup. They have totally taken the playfulness out of my cars handling, and it just feels numb and vague. It has global offices across East Asia and North America. Michelin sure do make it very confusing. You're used to fighting the tyres. They are noticeably more grippy, but I don't have confidence in them as I can't feel what they are doing, I just have to turn the wheel and hope they will grip. OK I also changed to slightly wider (215 vs 205) and to a much lighter wheel, like +3kgs lighter, each. I feel like I should to go to an empty car park and find the point where they let go, just to satisfy my curiosity. Verdict – happy as !! Do you mean Dunlop Fast Response? It seems with the PS4 that even after you tip it into a corner, you are still fighting the car to get it to hold it's line (yet there is no steering feel apart from "springiness" around centre, so it's not like you have much idea of what's going on).
